Microwave mug cake recipe | How to make Microwave Mug Cake

This has to be the fastest cake ever.. not to mention the easiest..
It is a recipe that my little son loves making all by himself.


  • Self raising flour - 4 tbsp
  • Caster sugar - 4 tbsp
  • Cocoa powder - 2 tbsp
  • Egg beaten - 1 medium to large
  • Sunflower oil - 3 tbsp
  • Vanilla essence - 2-3 drops
  • Chocolate chips ( optional) - 2 tbsp


Step 1

Get the largest coffee mug that that you own.

Step 2

Mix the flour, sugar and cocoa powder in a bowl . Now add in the beaten egg.

Step 3

Add the rest of the ingredients. Mix till smooth.

Step 4

Pour the mixture into the mug.

Step 5

If you are feeling like a lot of chocolate, please add in those chocolate chips now.. specially if the little chef is around.

Step 6

Heat the mug in the microwave on high for 4-5 minutes ( in a 700W microwave. Those with higher wattage microwaves, please adjust the time / power accordingly.. otherwise it will burn! )

Step 7

Keep looking at it through the glass.. It wonderful to see the cake rising and the little one hopping . Its incredible how fast the cake rises.

Step 8

Once it has stopped rising, check that it is firm to touch.

Step 9

Then a couple of minutes is all it takes to cool.. Hope you can wait that long..

Step 10

If you can't , eat away straight from the mug. I tipped it over .

Note: The recipe can be split into 2 mugs if you dont have a really big mug.. and try not to top up the mug with the batter. Half full does it!
