Houmous (pronounced Hummus) has its origins in medieval Egypt , but is now popular world over. It is often served as a dip with carrots and peppers or eaten with pita bread.
This simple recipe is high in iron, Vit C and B6 and serves as a complete protein when served with bread. A favourite with all ages, it is great to have in the fridge as a handy, healthy snack.
Ingredients
- Chickpeas - cooked or tinned - 1 cup
- Tahini - Sesame paste - 6 tbsp
- Lemon juice - 2 tbsp
- Garlic - 3 flakes
- Cumin powder - 1/2 tsp
- Powdered Pepper - 1/4 tsp
- Chilli powder - 1/2 tsp
- Salt - to taste
- Olive oil - 3 tbsp
- Water - 1/3 cup
Method
Drain and wash chickpeas, if using from a tin. If using dried chickpeas, soak overnight and cook about 1/4 cup . Use 1 cup of chickpeas for this recipe.
In a food processor, pop in all the ingredients except the olive oil. Blend to a coarse consistency.
Transfer to a serving bowl, chill in a refridgerator to cool. It tastes best chilled.
Garnish with olive oil and serve as a dip with pita bread, fried chicken or just vegetables. The choice is endless, the taste..delicious.
