PrintDid you know that it is Breakfast week from 25th to 31st January?  The Shake Up Your Wake Up campaign champions the importance of breakfast bby celebrating Breakfast week every year in January.

So what’s the big deal about breakfast?

When we wake up after about 8-10 hours of sleep, do we actually realise that we have actually not had a meal for the last 10-14 hours at least?

Therefore, the term ‘Break fast’ came from actually breaking that fast.

Of course, your body needs some fuel to start the day, so it’s vital that we provide it with the right nutrients.

Whether we are looking to lose weight, stay fit or looking for a clear head- breakfast is most important.

So should you never miss breakfast?

Here are 10 very important reasons why you should never ever do so.

1. Breakfast improves your metabolism: Your metabolism is slow in the morning, and giving it some food kickstarts the system, recharges it, and gets it up and running to meet the rigours of the day. Skip any other meal if you have to, but never ever skip breakfast.

2.Skipping breakfast can affect concentration and memory: Have you ever experienced this? I find my efficiency is really affected if I skip my breakfast. Breakfast fuels the grey cells and aids concentration and efficiency.

3.Maintains blood sugar levels: If you don’t eat anything in the morning, your  blood sugar level is reduced and could lead to hypoglycemia. You could experience sweating, dizziness or  nausea. I know many people who go for their morning run on an empty stomach and I cannot even begin to tell you how wrong that is.

4.Breakfast reduces cravings: You end up eating much more, if you do miss your breakfast and then start popping every single thing in your mouth. You actually crave food- so this actually reduces your weight loss- the perfect opposite of what you’re trying to achieve.

5. Healthy breakfasts actually improve cholesterol levels and insulin sensitivity. Do remember to have a healthy, balanced breakfast every morning.

6. Skipping breakfast affects your moods- Grump alert!:   Skipping breakfast causes a person to get irritable and causes bad tempers. The day you’re in a foul mood right from the morning- just think of what you ate in the morning- you probably didn’t.

7. Breakfast helps burn calories:  Eating small meals through the day keeps the metabolism high, thereby burning calories constantly rather than sending the body into storage mode. Do eat those breakfasts and remember that if you eat carbs, they are best eaten at breakfast.

8. Breakfast boosts energy: Giving your body a good and nutrient rich breakfast, gives you a huge dose of nutrients, increases energy and reduces fatigue.

9. Breakfast increases weight loss: Missing meals actually slows down the body and it starts storing energy rather than burning fat. But breakfast fires up the metabolism and accelerates weight loss.

10. Breakfast prevents Vitamin and Mineral deficiencies: Healthy breakfast foods contain vitamins and minerals that can help boost your daily intake of these important nutrients. Eat fruits, yoghurt, eggs and oats to provide your body with the essential antioxidants, fibre and calcium needed for the day. The yoghurt will also provide for friendly bacteria so essential for the gut.

I suppose all this talk of breakfast must’ve gotten you hungry.
