If you visit any Asian or Indian household, you will always find a rice cooker in the kitchen. I think the invention of the rice cooker has made life really simple. No more worrying whether the rice is perfectly done or not. Everything is at the touch of a button. All you do is wash the rice, put in the required amount of water and then, yes.. the most important job.. press the button.

Don’t smirk.. it is important.. I can tell you of 10 different occasions when I’ve had a party at my house and everything else was ready but for the rice because of the all important function… pressing the ON button.

I have always used large rice cookers but I recently got to try out the Mini Rice cooker from Judge.

What I like most about it is that it is mini- yes you can cook rice just for 1 or 2 people. Some families are small and they do not need huge cookers that cook for 4-6 people. Not only do larger rice cookers take more shelf space, but also you need to cook a little more rice than you would’ve needed to avoid it from burning at the bottom. Too much wastage.

The Judge Mini Rice Cooker is easy to use. It has an interior pot with a 0.3 litre capacity made out of nonstick aluminum. The rice cooker has a flip-top lid that’s easy to open. The cooker also comes alongwith a measuring cup and a spatula, to enable you to measure rice accurately.

Cooking is easy. Just add in a cup of rice and twice as much water and yes, don’t forget to press the cook button! You should have hot piping rice ready in about 15 minutes. After the rice is cooked, the rice cooker switches on to the keep warm mode which is great. I find it rather annoying to be served cold rice.

I am quite pleased with the performance of this rice cooker because, it cooks exactly as much as I need- which is not a lot , no wastage at all, takes very little counter space and is very cute too. Also the nonstick container that cooks rice is great quality and very easy to wash with some warm soap.

So whether you want to cook regular rice, pulao (pilaf) or sushi rice or even quinoa- this is the right product for you!

I made a lovely seafood fried rice with the rice that I made from this rice cooker.

Cooked and cooled rice- 1 cup

Onions, sliced- 1/4 cup

Ginger grated- 1/2 tsp

Garlic grated- 1/2 tsp

Eggs- 2, lightly beaten with a pinch of salt and pepper

Fish sticks- 4, shredded

Prawns, cooked- 1/2 cup

Spring onion greens- 2, finely chopped

Method

  1. Marinate the prawns with a pinch of salt, pepper and 1/4 tsp soy sauce for 5 minutes.
  2. Shred the fish-sticks lengthwise. The fish-sticks are already cooked, so there is no need to cook them further.
  3. Heat 1 tbsp oil in a wok.
  4. When hot, add in the beaten eggs, scramble and put aside.
  5. Add in the prawns , fry till pink and curled up. Keep aside.
  6. Now in the same wok, add in another tbsp of oil. When hot, add in the chopped onions.
  7. When pink, add in the ginger and garlic. Fry for 30 seconds till fragrant.
  8. Add in rice, salt, soy sauce and pepper.
  9. When the rice gets slightly coloured, add in the prawns, fried eggs and fish-sticks. Mix well. Cook till piping hot.
  10. Garnish with spring onions and serve hot.

So gift yourself this rice cooker and make some delicious meals for your friends and family!
