Did you know that the word Yule originates from the ancient Winter Solstice festivals in Scandinavia and Northern Europe?
The pagans believed that the sun stood still for 12 days at the end of the year, and burning a Yule log kept light going in its absence.
The Christians believed that the shepherds brought bundles of hay & kindling to light a fire to keep Baby Jesus warm during this time.
Hence the 12 days of Christmas.
So happened the tradition of burning a Yule log over the 12 days of Christmas to ensure good fortune, wealth and happiness for the year that followed.
In modern times, a Yule Log has come to mean a chocolate cake that resembles a Log.
Traditionally, the log was ‘welcomed’ into the house on Christmas Eve. It was then kept in the hearth and a Christmas blessing was said over it and it was then sprinkled with wine before being set alight. The log was then burnt over the 12 days of Christmas and the last of the log was kept as kindling for the next year’s Yule Log.
Certainly Wood, a Herefordshire based family business company and a pioneer in the kiln-drying process is trying to revive the old Christmas tradition of burning Yule Logs.
