In Bengal, Lakshmi Puja is celebrated on Kojagiri Poornima, mostly by people hailing from East Bengal, now Bangladesh. This pooja has been celebrated for the last 4 generations in my husband’s family and Narkel Naru is especially made on this day. Here’s a shortcut recipe from my Mother-in-law. The recipe is extremely easy and the ladoos are melt in the mouth delicious.
Ingredients
- Fresh/frozen coconut, grated (without skin)—2 cups about 250 gm
- Condensed milk—250 ml (approximately the same amount as coconut)
- Elaichi (Cardamom powder)—1 pinch
Method
Step 1
In a large wok/ kadhai, put the grated coconut. Add the condensed milk and mix well. At the beginning cook on a medium flame. Reduce the flame after a while and keep stirring constantly on a low flame till the mixture dries.
Step 2
Check for doneness on the hand, if you roll it ., the hand should get slightly oily.
Step 3
Add the cardamom powder and mix well. Take care to keep the nadu mixture absolutely white.
Step 4
Add 1 tsp maida (all-purpose flour) and switch off the gas. Mix thoroughly.
Step 5
Roll into small laddoos or nadus and enjoy!
Will definitely try this

Why do we need to add maida?
Ananya, maida helps bind it together, otherwise it tends to fall apart. The paneer doesn’t stick together. Hope that helps. Let me know how it goes.
This is my favorite naru.
Loved the naru. Thanks for the recipe. First time I made it
