Fabulous Masala (Spicy) Prawn Curry

If I could, I would eat prawns all day, everyday. Whether in a complex spicy curry or  batter dipped and fried like the Japanese version, they are just fabulous. From the tiniest shrimp to the largest king Prawns,  I love them all and am always looking for different ways to cook them.

This is a lovely recipe sans coconut that my Mum used to make.

Ingredients

  • Prawns- 250 g
  • Tomato, finely chopped- 1
  • Onion,finely chopped- 2
  • Turmeric powder- 1tsp
  • Chilli powder- 1 tsp
  • Ginger paste- 1tbsp
  • Garlic paste- 1tbsp
  • Coriander (dhania) powder- 1/2 tsp
  • Garam Masala- 1/4 tsp
  • Chopped coriander leaves 2 tbsp
  • Salt- to taste
  • Sugar- 1 pinch

Method

Step 1

Wash and clean the prawns. You could completely remove the shell or leave the tail part of the shell on, as I have done here.

Step 2

Mix salt, half of the turmeric powder and half the chilli powder with the prawns, and leave for 15 minutes.

Step 3

Chop the onions and coriander leaves.

Step 4

In a hot pan, add oil.

Step 5

Fry onions till pink. Add ginger, garlic paste. Fry for 1-2 minutes.

Step 6

Add the tomatoes, add some salt and a pinch of sugar. Let the tomato soften.

Step 7

Add in the turmeric and chilli powders.

Step 8

Add the prawns. mix well. Stir fry for 2-3 minutes.

Step 9

Add the coriander powder and garam masala. Mix well.

Step 10

Add in 1/2 a cup of hot water. Let mix well. Simmer for 1 minute. Add in the chopped coriander and serve hot.

Step 11

Serve with rotis or hot rice.
